This is one of the more beautiful stretches of the Danube, with many small towns and vineyards.

Durnstein is located in the heart of Austria's Wachau wine region. The castle ruin on top of the hill is Kuenriger Castle. Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned here in the 12th Century.

The next town is Weissenkirche with its 15th century Gothic church.

Next is St. Michael with its Gothic style fortified church.

The town of Spitz has castle ruins.

The Schonbuhel Castle was built in the 12th century on the site of a former Roman fort. Like other castles and churches, it has undergone repairs and remodeling. What we were seeing was the remodel from the early 19th century.

Above the town of Spitz there are the ruins of the Hinterhaus castle.
