Bamberg

Bamberg 2007

Our ship sailed through the night and we awoke in Bamberg. After breakfast we were taken on a city walk.

We saw the old town hall, built in 1744-56 on a bridge across the Regnitz River. This shows the "power struggle" which existed between the Church and the secular authorities. The local citizens controlled the town on one side of the river and the prince-bishops the other. Neither side was willing to give up any of its territory for the town hall to be built and eventually the problem was resolved by building it in "no-man's land" on the bridge.

This end of the town hall was painted all over.

The other end is half-timbered and overlooks this view.

We walked across the bridge and up the hill to the Bamberger Dom St. Peter und St. George. The cathedral is a late Romanesque building with four imposing towers. It was founded in 1004 by the emperor Henry II, finished in 1012 and consecrated on May 6, 1012. It was later partially destroyed by fire in 1081. The new cathedral, built by St. Otto of Bamberg, was consecrated in 1111, and in the 13th century received its present late-Romanesque form.

Because there was a mass in the cathedral, we were not able to take any photos. However, we were allowed to visit the Rose Garden with a view of an Abbey.

The green building on the right is a brewery famous for its smoked beer. We were able to try this beer in the restaurant to the left.

This is an area along the river with buildings which used to be the homes of the fishermen.

Two more views of the Town Hall from the lower bridge.

A closeup.

It took a long time for the cathedral to be built, and during that time tastes in architecture changed. This is why we can see several styles in different parts of the cathedral, particularly Romanesque and Gothic styles. Between these two styles is the Transitional style, and this is the way the nave was built. This is also true of the towers. Two towers are Romanesque on the left and tw are Gothic on the right

As we walked to our bus we were across the river from the beautiful builddings mentioned above.
