On our way to Avignon, we stopped briefly in the town of Lourmarin and saw this chateau with a 15th c. wing and a Renaissance wing.
Another view of the same chateau.
We made another short stop to see the village of Bonnieux from a distance.
Another view along the way was this old bridge out in the countryside.
We arrived at the town of Roussillon, a center of ochre mining.
The quarry was closed that morning, but this view at the edge of the quarry shows many of the colors of the ochre which was mined here. Although not used as much for paints now, the ochre is still used in the building industry.
These photos, taken from an earlier trip or other sources, are representative of the quarry.
The soil here is of the same ochre colors.
The buildings here reflect the use of the ochre for stucco.
The old church.
The view of the valley below was spectacular.
We continue on to Gordes.
