Roussillon

On our ride from Pont du Gard to Roussillon, we stopped at a viewpoint where we could get a view of the hilltown of Gordes.

From there we could get a glimpse of Roussillon, across the valley and on the horizon on the left.

The town is situated on the top of a hill.

Roussillon is so named because of red soil and rock there.

Some of the buildings in the town are very colorful.

From the town we have a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside, including the red rock cliff on the right.

Our hotel is named Reves d'Ocres (Dreams of Ochre) and you can see some of the red rock on the right.

We had a group dinner in a local restaurant in the evening.

This was such an artistic shot that I used Photoshop to make it even more so.

The main course that evening was lamb, but the entrée (beginning course in France) was a very good terrine.

After a trip to Isle sur la Sorgue the next day, we returned to Roussillon and Patrick took us on a walk in the quarry where the ochre was mined from Roman times until the 1950's when synthetic colors became available.
