Although the tour actually started in Varenna on Lake Como, some members of the tour came early and spent a few days in Milan. For those who did, the Duomo was a highlight, with its many spires. These could be seen from the rooftop.

Also outstanding were the Berara museum and Sforza Castle. A highlight of the latter was the Rondanini Pietà by Michaelangelo which he had begun in 1522 and redone in 1555. He recarved the figure of Christ out of what had previously been Mary and he worked on it up to 6 days before his death. It was to be the first of many works of Michaelangelo we would see on the trip.
On to Varenna.
