Individual Note: At the age of 34, with wife Zwantje(age 34) and three sons: Berend(age 7), Hendrik(age 5), and Pieter(not yet 1), sailed from Rotterdam on the South Carolina in 1856 and arrived in New York on July 22, 1856. An Overisel Township map of 1873 shows an L. Kiel owning 40 acres about 1 mile south of where Don was born.

Individual Note: Harm and Geesjen were married in New Holland, SD and started farming in that area. A hail storm wiped out their entire spring crop. They soon moved to Sioux Center and lived there until 1944 when they moved to the Holland Home in Chicago, IL

The message states that all Boonstra's originate in Aldeboarn. In 1811 when
Emperor Napoleon obliged everyone to choose a fixed surname, some chose to
use the name of the town or village they lived in (in some form or another).
That's how the name Boonstra/Boarnstra came into being. At the end of the
19th century many left for the US. From Friesland they also spread al over
The Netherlands.
