Materials

• Most of the scrolls are written on parchment, which is made from processed animal hide, usually sheep or goat in this area. The hide is treated with lime, scraped, washed, stretched, dried and burnished.

• The writing was with pens made of reeds. The black ink was iron-gall ink and the red was cinnebar.
