Paris and Three Cities in The Netherlands

Paris and Three Cities of the Netherlands

The Louvre

Our first stop was something new to us, remains of the medieval Louvre as a building. This dimly lit room underground has walls from the reign of Phillipe Auguste (1180-1224), supports of vaults from that of Louis IX (1126-1270), and arches from the 16th century. The following photos are of the Louve as an architectural masterpiece.

We then began looking at the Louvre as an art museum. We saw many works, some by da Vinci, Raphael, Veronese, David, Ingres, Gericault, Delacroix, and of course the Mona Lisa. I show a few of them in the gallery below.

During this time we also saw many sculptural works and I show some below. We actually did not see the Winged Victory in the form of the photo below. Two days earlier they had put scaffolding around the statue in preparation for moving it to another room for restoration and cleaning, a nine month job.

We stopped for some lunch and then went on to see the English galleries, the Flemish and Netherlands galleries, the French galleries, a special exhibit of drawings and pastels, and even more. After six and a half hours we walked back to our hotel and rested before going out for a delicious dinner of confit de canard, garlic potatoes, a salad and some wine. It was a great ending to a great day.

Tomorrow we see d'Orsay and l'Orangerie.
