The Mauritshuis, a major art museum in the Hague, is currently closed for renovation. Approximately 100 of its paintings are displayed in the Gemeentemuseum, including famous works of Vermeer, Rembrandt, Steen, Potter and Frans Hals.
Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915) was a leading artist of The Hague School. From 1866 Mesdag and his wife Sientje gradually built a remarkable collection of paintings of artists they admired and it is now housed at what had been their home. The focal point of The Mesdag Collection is the French Barbizon School and The Hague School. Some Hague School artists were greatly influenced by Barbizon painters such as Corot, Daubigney and Rosseau.
Our next stop is at Haarlem.
