After ten years of rebuilding, renovation and restoration, the Rijksmuseum has opened its doors again. For the first time in history the museum underwent a complete transformation of both its building and the presentation of its collection, Presently it displays about 8000 works covering 800 years of history.
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (15 July 1606 - 4 October 1669) was a Dutch painter and etcher. He is generally considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art and the most important in Dutch history. His contributions to art came in a period of great wealth and cultural achievement that historians call the Dutch Golden Age when Dutch Golden Age painting was extremely prolific and innovative.
Others in the Hall of Honor were Johannes Vermeer, Jan Steen and Frans Hals. Since we have seen some of the Frans Hals works before I include three works of Peter Jansz Saenredam in this gallery.
This does not begin to do justice to the Rijksmuseum. I have only noted here some of our favorites from two time periods, the Golden Age of the 1600's and the Hague School of the 1800's. The Rijsksmuseum has much more in its 4 floors of works from 1100-2000 and special collections. In a day and a half we saw less than half of the contents of the museum.
