Open Air Museum

This museum is set in 100 acres of parkland near the city of Arnhem.  About 100 authentic farmhouses, cottages, barns, windmills, and workshops have been assembled here to illustrate rural architecture and life in the past.

One of the poorest homes was the peat sod hut .

The following farmhouse dates from about 1770 and the two rooms in the rear are used for animals.

The following is a picture of a more elegant house. Note the roof which is both tiled and thatched.

This is a Reformed church of about 1630.

This is the interior of that church with  chairs for the men and benches on the side for the women and children.

This is the area of the papermill where the beating of the cloth took place.  It is powered by a water wheel.

The following is a reconstruction of a Zaan village.  The brickhouse in the center is a merchant's house from 1686.

There were a number of windmills here as well, but this one is different  in that it powered a sawmill.

They even had some old children's toys which some of the adults enjoyed!

On to Leeuwarden.
