Olives and Truffles

On the way back to Montone from Assisi we stopped at the Mancianti olive mill.

Although it was not the season for pressing olives, we were able to see the modern presses used in the process.

We also saw the vats where the olive oil is stored.

The owners had prepared some bruschetta so we could taste three varieties of their olive oil.

After returning to our hotel in Montone for a rest, we rode a short distance to the home of Sergio and Eva for a truffle hunt. Here the group is walking around a vineyard to the area where we hope to find truffles.

Sergio and the white dog Nappo are leading the way among the trees that Sergio had bought some ten years earlier. These trees had been inoculated with truffle spores.

Nappo has found one and Sergio is about to carefully dig it out.

Nappo was right and he receives a treat for finding the truffle Sergio has in his hand.

Nappo was able to find about a dozen truffles Here I am holding two in my hand.

Eva had prepared a dinner for us with many types of bruschetta (including one with truffles), a number of cheeses, a pasta dish with pork sausage, one with two kinds of prosciutto, etc, etc. Here Sergio is shaving some truffle on fritata, so we were able to taste the fruits of our "labor."

Nina thanked Sergio and Eva for the wonderful evening and we heartily agreed.

After all the activity of the day, Georgio was there with the bus to take us back to our rooms in Montone.

The next day we were going to stop in Deruta on our way to Orvieto.
