    www.erfskipterpdoarpen.nl/documents/Engels/Emigrants1/AmelanderJong.html

The message states that all Boonstra's originate in Aldeboarn. In 1811 when
Emperor Napoleon obliged everyone to choose a fixed surname, some chose to
use the name of the town or village they lived in (in some form or another).
That's how the name Boonstra/Boarnstra came into being. At the end of the
19th century many left for the US. From Friesland they also spread al over
The Netherlands.
