Paris and Three Cities in The Netherlands

Paris and Three Cities of the Netherlands

d'Orsay and l'Orangerie

We had a good day today- 4 hours at d'Orsay. First, we look at the building, which was converted from a railway station. The main floor had many sculptures.

One floor had works from the Barbizon School, Courbet's masterpieces and the early works of Manet, Degas and Monet.

On the top floor they had a huge exhibition of masterpieces of the Impressionistic movement from 1860 to 1900. It was difficult to choose from them.

They also had works from the Academic Movement of the 1850's (ingres, Delacroix, etc.), the Symbolic Movement (Mureau, etc.) and the Toulouse-Lautrec room. On stillanother floor they had the Neo-Impressionistic and the Post-Impressionistic works of Van Gogh, Gaugin, Seurat, etc.

From there we walked to l'Orangerie to see the great Water Lilies paintings of Monet as well as many works by Renoir and Picasso and other artists. The Water Lilies paintings take up two rooms and would be 55 feet long if placed end to end.

Then we took a nice walk through the Tuileries Gardens, and we even sat there for quite a while, as seen in the last photo above. On the walk back to the hotel we stopped at a MonoPrix for some wine and some ham and cheese and yogurt for a light meal in our room tonight—-before we went out for what is supposed to be the best gelato in Paris!

Next we see Sainte-Chapelle, the Conciergerie, and more of the Louvre.
