On the way back to our hotel in Roussillon we stopped at the hill town of Lacoste. This is a beautiful village perched on the east end of a mountain spine which has wonderful views of the valley below.
Lacoste is the site of Peter Mayle's book "Hotel Pastis." All of his books on Provence were set in this general area and the signs point to the towns are familiar to his readers.
Also in Lacoste, many of us met and talked with architecture students from the Savannah School of Art and Design, who were spending 8 weeks in Lacoste learning about the buildings of the area. Tom spent a fair amount of time talking with one of the students there.
The ruins of the château at the top of the village date mostly 16th-18th centuries, but the walls go back to the 12th. A number of us climbed up there, including Patrick and Pamela.
Rose also made the hike up there.
It was an interesting hike with some interesting buildings and ruins along the way.
At the very top were the ruins of a château which once belonged to the Marquis de Sade, who lived there from 1774 until 1778 when he was arrested.
While some were hiking up to the top of Lacoste, others were sitting in the shade enjoying the view.
At the end of this adventure, Ludo was waiting for us with the bus.
On y va to Avignon.
