St. Remy

We were disappointed that the Roman ruins at Glenum were not available to visitors. Even the Roman arch of 10-25 CE pictured here was covered with scaffolding.

We were able to visit the St. Paul Monastery, which served as a mental hospital that treated Vincent Van Gogh froom 1889 to 1890.

We did see a room which was supposed to have been Van Gogh's room, but it looked quite different from his painting.

From the monastery there was a trail to the town of St. Remy, marked with signs with paintings by Van Gogh with the possible location where he painted them.

After lunch in St. Remy, we made a stop for olive tasting. We tasted oils pressed at different times of the year as well as both green and dark olives and two different tapenades.

We could see the olive trees...

..as well as some of the olives which had been harvested.

We then returned to the barge, still docked at Arles, and sailed north on the Rhone a short distance to enter the Canal du Rhone a Sete. We docked at Gallician for the night.

The next day we will visit the Ornithological Park in the Camargue Region.
