Ephesus Museum

A model of the Temple of Artemis in the foreground and the statue of Artemis in the background

Second Century frescoes from the room of Socrates.

Artifacts from the Fountain of Pollio we had seen in Ancient Ephesus.

The 3 foot high head and arm of Domitian, whose temple we had seen the day before.

The frieze of the Gate of Hadrian. The left panel shows the legend of Androcles and the settlement of Ephesus. The Oracle at Delphi told Androcles a fish and a wild boar would lead him to the location in which to build his city. As he was cooking fish on an open fire one day, sparks lit nearby bushes, and a wild boar ran out. He chased the boar and killed it, then established the colony on that site.

This panel shows Androcles on his horse and the boar at the upper right.

Statuary from the Fountain of Trajan.

The statue of Augustus which has been "Christianized" by scratching a cross on the forehead.

There were a number of Parthian monument reliefs.

Next we go to Colossae.
